Christine Fleming appointed as foundation’s new president

National Marrow Donor Program Names New Be The Match Foundation President

MINNEAPOLIS -- May 06, 2009

The National Marrow Donor Program® (NMDP) has appointed Christine Fleming as president of its fundraising partner, Be The Match FoundationSM (formerly The Marrow Foundation).

Be The Match Foundation works with individuals, families, corporations and other partners to raise funds to help make life-saving marrow transplants a reality for thousands of patients with leukemia and other life-threatening diseases.

Fleming brings nearly 20 years of fundraising experience to Be The Match Foundation. For the last six years, she served as vice president of the TGen Foundation, where she led fundraising efforts for the Translational Genomics Research Institute, a nonprofit biomedical research institute. Fleming also previously served as assistant dean of development at The University of Texas at Austin (UT) College of Natural Sciences, and before that she ran the UT Business School Foundation.

“Christine’s proven track record in scientific fundraising, coupled with her extensive experience in planned giving and corporate and foundation relations, make her an ideal fit for this position,” said Jeffrey W. Chell, M.D., CEO of the NMDP. “Her passion for our life-saving mission and outstanding leadership skills will be a great asset as Be The Match Foundation intensifies its efforts to raise money to help patients in need of marrow or cord blood transplants.”

Financial contributions to the foundation help add new members to the NMDP’s Be The Match RegistrySM, provide financial assistance to patients and donors who need it, and help improve the quality of life for patients through scientific and medical research.

“I am honored to have been chosen to lead Be The Match Foundation,” Fleming said.  “This is the only nonprofit organization in the world where people just like you and me can join a registry and have the unique opportunity to save another person’s life. When people give generously to the Foundation through their financial contributions, the impact is significant in many ways. It is a privilege for me to work with such extraordinary, caring and selfless people.”

Together with the NMDP, Be The Match Foundation is dedicated to creating an opportunity for all patients to receive the transplant therapy they need. For the past 10 years, the foundation’s work with families, corporations and other partners has raised millions of dollars for patients in need. With continued support, Be The Match Foundation will attract, engage and motivate people who want to save a life.
