Compensating marrow donors may have disastrous effects on patients

The dangers of repealing bone marrow compensation restrictions

U.S. News and World Report

Michael Boo, Chief Strategy Officer of the National Marrow Donor Program, provided commentary on Be The Match and the NMDP’s position on compensation in an editorial titled, “The Dangers of Repealing Bone Marrow Compensation Restrictions.” The editorial was for the magazine’s “Two Takes” section, where lawmakers and others weigh in on opposite sides of a major public policy issue.

Compensating marrow donors may have disastrous effects on patients around the world, the article noted, citing instances where people could refuse to make a lifesaving donations if they are not paid. Boo explained that money paid to an individual donor would be much better spent if it were used to increase the total number of people in the registry, which would in turn help multiple patients in need.
