Ryan, who recently had to take time off from his job helping autistic children and their families, explained that his Filipino heritage makes it difficult to find a suitable donor because matches are usually found in someone with similar ethnic background. However, only 7 percent of the registry is Asian, so he continues to encourage people with Asian heritage to join the registry.
