Giving Stem Cells to Save Lives

WABC-TV New York City by Dr. Jay Adlersberg

ABC7 News New York City

New Jersey resident Jiro Okochi and his family were featured on ABC7 Eyewitness News and shared their family’s personal story. When Jiro’s son, Finn, was just an infant, his life was threatened by a rare immune deficiency disorder. Finn’s only hope for a cure was a marrow transplant, but no one in Finn’s family was a donor match. Finn’s mixed race background also made it challenging to find a match. Thankfully, a match was found for Finn on the
Be The Match Registry.

Four years after his son’s life-saving transplant, Jiro was identified as a donor match on the Be The Match Registry for an anonymous patient in need of a transplant. Jiro donated peripheral blood stem cells, giving a second chance at life to someone in need.
