InternationalThe BBC covered leukemia patient and social media entrepreneur Amit Gupta’s efforts to recruit South Asian potential donors to the Be The Match Registry. Driven by his own need for a marrow donor, Gupta has sparked donor registration parties, or “swab parties,” all across the United States, from Hindu temples to social media centers such as Google and Facebook headquarters.
Nayda Dutchin, national account executive for the National Marrow Donor Program and Be The Match, was quoted in the article and explained that religious and cultural barriers can prevent minorities from registering to donate for the sake of altruism. However, Gupta’s efforts are changing the perceptions of joining the registry and increasing the number of registered minority donors.
