About Be The Match Foundation

http://marrow.org/Giving/About_the_Foundation/About_Be_The_Match_Foundation.aspx

Be The Match Foundation® raises funds to help patients who need a bone marrow or umbilical cord blood transplant find a donor and receive treatment.

A gift to Be The Match Foundation:

A history of helping patients

Be The Match Foundation and Be The Match®, operated by the National Marrow Donor Program®, have developed smart, compassionate and effective programs to dismantle barriers to marrow transplant, but we need your help.

We are proud of the past 25 years. Together, we've given birth to a new medical treatment that saves human life. But our pride is overshadowed by a greater sense of responsibility.

The best way to honor the scientists, donors and patients who paved the way for unrelated donor marrow transplant is to do more and do it better. Every Patient Counts! And more to the point, every patient is counting on us!

Invest in our programs and help us serve more patients. Half is not enough.

How we began

Our visionary founder was Admiral E. R. Zumwalt Jr. — the U.S. Navy’s youngest four star admiral and later Chief of Naval Operations. When his eldest son, Elmo, needed a bone marrow transplant to treat lymphoma, Admiral Zumwalt recognized the significant financial needs of patients being served by the NMDP.

After Elmo passed away, Admiral Zumwalt and his wife created The Marrow Foundation, now called Be The Match Foundation, to help meet that need.
